What are the work trends in 2021?

After 18 months of working from home and connecting via zoom meetings, what are the trends are we seeing moving forward as parts of the world open up gradually?

1. Employees do not want to commute

Pre pandemic, 45% of employees would spend up to 60 minutes commuting to work every day. This was the standard for a long time so it was accepted as normal. However, after over a year of getting that time back in the morning and evening because of working from home, it is difficult to go back to the old ways. 70% of respondents in Hubbles survey mentioned that no longer having to commute was one of the biggest benefits of working from home. With 55% responding financial savings and 42% more time with loved ones. All of which are related to eliminating long commuting times to and from work.

The BOSS Business Centres are at the heart of Metro Vancouver, located at a SkyTrain station and with excellent parking available. We have seen new business in the last couple of months taking advantage of our central location for businesses spread across Vancouver and the lower mainland.

2. Employees want greater flexibility

Pre pandemic, flexibility at your job was considered a perk. But since the pandemic with many families caring for children at home while working, and others realizing the benefits in stress reduction setting your own schedule can bring. Many employees are now finding flexibility to be a requirement in their job.

At BOSS Business Centres in Burnaby, we have seen more flexible office arrangements for a variety of employers, including only part-time presence in the office. We pride ourselves on creating flexible arrangements for our clients.

3. Employees miss socializing in person

In Hubbles survey, 31% of respondents noted that less social time has been one of the biggest cons to working from home, with miscommunications being the second biggest concern.  With the world slowly opening up, employees may want to have the ability to meet up with their coworkers in person from time to time, to fulfill that social need as well as more easily do work without miscommunications.

We now have several clients who have company meetings once or twice per week in order to facilitate the social and communication aspects of the work environment.

4. Employees miss meeting up

In Hubbles survey 45% of respondents mentioned that one of the things they miss the most from their old way of life is meeting rooms. This may mean we will be seeing a new version of hybrid offices that are partially work from home with the occasional in-person meeting. When asked “84% of respondents would like to [meet] at least once a month, and 55% at least once a week.”

As we ease into a post pandemic world that no longer requires us to be social distancing, we will see more hybrid offices where employees partially work from home but will also meet in person regularly. See how BOSS can get you and your business set up with virtual office Burnaby!
